Bristol Airport Expansion decision should be called in – Foster

Bath MP Don Foster has written to Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government John Denham, asking him to call-in the planning decision to expand Bristol International Airport. In his letter, Don says that,

the expansion of the airport would have significant effects beyond its immediate locality, and has generated a large amount of regional controversy.

Currently, North Somerset Council are due to decide on the application at a meeting of their Development Control Committee, but Don would like to see a public inquiry and a decision by the Planning Inspectorate. Don said,

The expansion plans for Bristol International Airport have proved controversial, with residents across the region expressing their concerns. The decision is clearly of regional importance and should not be taken by North Somerset Council alone. I believe it is only right that we have a public inquiry into the proposal. The government should be investing in high-speed rail services to reduce the need for internal flights.

Fellow South West Lib Dem MPs Steve Webb (Northavon) and Stephen Williams (Bristol West) have also written to John Denham requesting a call-in.
